<br />
As I sat in church this second Sunday of Advent I tried to identify the feeling that being in the sanctuary this morning created in me. I decided it is a feeling of comfort. Now I know many people feel comfort when they are in church but I tried to dig deeper and figure out why I felt comfort, besides the obvious reason. The feeling wasn't created by the smell, or the decorations, or the order of the service. It was created by being around the other church members.<br />
<br />
I have been in the sanctuary when it is completely empty. I always feel bad when I am there alone and I don't feel some sense of awe or deep connection. If anything, I feel a bit uncomfortable when I am there by myself and the lights aren't on. Maybe this is something I need to work on.<br />
<br />
I like being in church and sitting next to my husband and children. I like talking to the older ladies who probably have more knowledge about life in their little pinky than I have in my whole body. Hearing the children's innocent, insightful or funny answers during the children's sermon makes me smile. The familiar faces of the choir make me feel happy. <br />
<br />
The pastor's sermon this morning was on "Love". I love my church family. Some I know better than others. Some may hold different views than I do. But we are all there for the same reason....to worship the Lord. I'm happy that these people are in my life and that I get to spend each Sunday with them. Our pastor said this morning, "Jesus is love, Jesus is the light". Sometimes loving others is hard. Sometimes I wonder "Why can't I love like Jesus loved?". I think loving your church family is a wonderful place to start practicing!Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17447400919857683429noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9009207600672975399.post-7431074894534430292014-11-30T16:57:00.001-08:002014-11-30T16:57:49.025-08:00Change of Seasons<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">As Thanksgiving weekend and Autumn come to an end I can't help but look back on this past season and recall fond memories: A weekend getaway in Vermont with Neil, kayaking with my mom, a college tour with Alison, and the start of a new hockey season for Matt. As we transition into winter many people dread the upcoming cold, snow and quietness. I don't feel that way. I know that this time of rest is needed to bring forth the joys of spring; the hope of new life, crocuses popping up to make us smile, and the smell of fresh spring air. As the first Sunday of Advent it is also a time for hope. This morning our pastor described "Hope" as " the light for people in deep darkness. Jesus is light. Jesus is hope.". As we move toward this Christmas season I encourage you to look for the light, look for the hope, and remember the reason we are celebrating this season of joy and anticipation.</span>Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17447400919857683429noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9009207600672975399.post-43609298772562564682014-02-05T18:08:00.000-08:002014-02-05T18:08:17.741-08:00Zentangle Cross<br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">

I tried loosening up a bit with this little drawing. I used a few tangles that were new to me like Lupe, Peas in a Pod and Druppel. I need to work a little bit more with them to get comfortable. I still had fun though, which is what it is all about!<br />

You can check out the official zentangle site <a href="http://www.zentangle.com/">here</a>. There are endless possibilities for creating with this process. It's fun, it's relaxing, and it's addicting!<br />
<br />
Traditional Zentangles are completed on a 3x3 tile (piece of paper). When you tangle on anything other than the tile your piece is considered a ZIA (Zentangle Inspired Art).<br />
<br />
I love hearing and singing hymns in church on Sunday mornings. Carrying the tune in my head after the service ends is like carrying around my own little treasure. A reminder of all of the wonderful gifts He has given to us. In an effort to carry the peaceful feelings of Sunday morning with me throughout the week I decided to tangle on a hymn from an old book I had. <br />

She is a sweetheart and so well behaved. She is afraid of our cats even though she is much bigger than them. She loves peanut butter and chasing her tennis ball. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's really easy to make and comes together in no time. The materials are few.........</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIp8mSZBCCewUPP4IpD8F6ips79pxCM5y6Y6lHNU7x4P6SUDX0lakBAvkYAgCgg74cYBeLPc8aSTx-lmsI8C5NiDWac32mTEJj0nIYeUQ7PQKID8GORPTq0bWMoaiUrJWdrHSfFUDnnpCb/s1600/necklace+supplies.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="396" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIp8mSZBCCewUPP4IpD8F6ips79pxCM5y6Y6lHNU7x4P6SUDX0lakBAvkYAgCgg74cYBeLPc8aSTx-lmsI8C5NiDWac32mTEJj0nIYeUQ7PQKID8GORPTq0bWMoaiUrJWdrHSfFUDnnpCb/s400/necklace+supplies.jpg" width="400" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You will need:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Modge Podge</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
paint brush</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
decorative paper (I used origami paper)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
matching cardstock</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
eye pins<br />
matching beads ( I used pearls)<br />
Heart punch ( you can use other shapes of course)<br />
bail<br />
chain<br />
<br />
This is a relatively inexpensive project too. First start out by cutting out 14 cardstock hearts and 2 decorative paper hearts.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho4gfxWbTAvIK2FfwcJji_dJkE2W5Vx2BUqvXoe1u8BDRVUuiEWd1fLuqCUzUJD815LVxjsgCt-eSZ1coKY476vDze3qZqL95Yh38a8rBHJcgtctxGHHOBR6YDWYkNRt8RWvAxX8ovN9Ci/s1600/heart+cutouts.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho4gfxWbTAvIK2FfwcJji_dJkE2W5Vx2BUqvXoe1u8BDRVUuiEWd1fLuqCUzUJD815LVxjsgCt-eSZ1coKY476vDze3qZqL95Yh38a8rBHJcgtctxGHHOBR6YDWYkNRt8RWvAxX8ovN9Ci/s400/heart+cutouts.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Using the paint brush apply the modge podge to 7 of the hearts while stacking them up one on top of the other. Try to get them lined up as evenly as possible. Finish with 1 of the decorative hearts. Repeat this step so that you have two heart stacks. Next, put the beads on the eye pins in whatever way that makes you happy. I found it easiest to make my loop for the bail before I glued the piece together. It's hard to manipulate the wire once the heart is together.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJMKPAmB7grCM3-bFup0nBduQW0imqv0aT8bPQnDhTEaCsa9bry7KjS8KNbUa5jZ_1fRk4lZUl4nQIuZUPRipeGA3n_YVGwPXD_AgULsY23Ezo9PgryR5N5OG5SP_ML-koXr8eGQ2yktMA/s1600/heart+process.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="280" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJMKPAmB7grCM3-bFup0nBduQW0imqv0aT8bPQnDhTEaCsa9bry7KjS8KNbUa5jZ_1fRk4lZUl4nQIuZUPRipeGA3n_YVGwPXD_AgULsY23Ezo9PgryR5N5OG5SP_ML-koXr8eGQ2yktMA/s400/heart+process.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
(sorry about the dark picture, I was doing this at night and could use some photography classes)<br />
<br />
Next, center the head pin in between the two hearts with the decorative paper facing the outside. You can technically wear this heart with either side facing out so you may want to choose two different decorative papers. Then you would have two necklaces in one! Generously apply Modge Podge in the middle of the heart stacks, where the eye pin is. Line up the two heart stacks and squeeze together. I held it in place for a few minutes and the two stacks dried together quickly. I then applied a coat of Modge Podge to all sides. Add your bail and chain and Viola!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
( I love birds on old postcards)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
This one is postmarked 1909 and reads " Come out some night as I haven't hardly had time to come and see you lately though I will <u>soon</u>. Wishing you a Happy New Year. Your Friend, Bev" The recipient was Clara.<br />
<br />
We complain about how hard it is to find time to see our friends with all we have to do today. Can you imagine how difficult it was for friends to get together 100 years ago? Laundry alone must have taken forever! <br />
<br />
What I love about both of these cards is that one girlfriend was sending it to another to keep in touch. They are the original facebook! Women need their mothers, sisters, and girlfriends to connect with. That's how it was 100 years ago and I have no doubt it will be the same in the next 100! I found it years ago on <a href="http://allrecipes.com/">Allrecipes</a>. I know many people tweak recipes but I am not that creative in the kitchen. I always make this recipe the same way the recipe calls for. We all love it. It is hearty and comforting. You can find the recipe<a href="http://allrecipes.com/recipe/the-best-chicken-soup-ever/detail.aspx?event8=1&prop24=SR_Title&e11=best%20chicken%20soup%20ever&e8=Quick%20Search&event10=1&e7=Home%20Page"> here.</a> Enjoy!<br />

I thank thee because, when I have been sometimes interrupted in my work </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
and my thoughts of Thee have been diverted, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have found how pleasing it is to my mind to feel the motions of Thy Spirit</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
quickening me and exciting me to return. </div>

My husband and I will be officially joining the United Methodist Church next weekend. In preparing to do so we have been reading about John Wesley, one of the founders of the Methodist movement. When I was looking through writings/prayers that belonged to my grandmother I found this prayer by Susanna Wesley. Recognizing the last name I looked her up in Wikipedia. It turns out that she was John Wesley's mother. The funny thing was, when I looked her up I discovered that she was born on this day 344 years ago! How weird is that! I guess it was meant to be that I found this prayer in my grandmother's belongings and am sharing it today. You can read about her <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Susanna_Wesley">here</a>.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Materials:</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
6 silver bead tips</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
#6 silk thread</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
1 multi strand clasp</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
stone chips ( I used about 110 chips)</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
pliers</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
First, tie a knot onto the end of your silk thread and string your bead tip up close to the knot. The little hook of the bead tip should be facing the end of the thread. Make one more knot onto the other side of the bead tip to secure it. Next, string enough stone chips onto the thread to make a five inch length. ( I went with five inches because the person I was making it for has very small wrists. My clasp added on two inches, not including the extender chain. ) Knot your thread at the end of the strand and add your second bead tip. Knot to secure.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Repeat this process two more times, giving you three completed strands. Hook each strand onto the three strand clasp and then attach to the other coordinating side. Enjoy your new bracelet!</div>

It is a beautiful love story set in the early 1900's. Enza and Ciro first meet in the Italian Alps. Their story continues in America as they both struggle to establish themselves in this new country.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: x-small;"> </span></div>
What I love most about this book is Trigiani's writing. She has an incredibly beautiful and poetic way of describing things. Here is an excerpt:<br />
<br />
"The only sound was the soft, rhythmic sweep of her footsteps, like hands dusting flour across an old wooden cutting board."<br />
<br />
Don't you automatically know that feeling of your hands dusting flour on a cutting board? Her sentences are so descriptive. They make you FEEL! She does this over and over again.<br />
<br />
I have read several of Adriana Trigiani's books which I have truly enjoyed: Brava Valentine, Very Valentine, Big Stone Gap, Lucia Lucia.....to name a few. I have loved this one the best.<br />

This bracelet is a beautiful way to put the two together. It's very comfortable to wear and kind of "rolls" on your wrist.<br />

Materials:<br />
<br />
2 silver bead tips<br />
2 silver jump rings<br />
silver toggle clasp<br />
23 6mm pearls ( I like Swarovski crystal pearls)<br />
ribbon 1/4 inch wide ( I've only used 100% polyester ribbon but you can experiment with others)<br />
beading glue<br />
<a href="http://www.firemountaingems.com/itemdetails/H203858BS">100% satin thread</a> ( I like #6)<br />

<br />
The silk thread comes with a beading needle already attached. I start by putting a knot on the end of the thread, leaving about an inch tail. Add a bead tip and knot the thread right up close to the bead tip. Make sure the little hook of the bead tip is facing the end of the string. This is where you attach your jump ring at the end. Next, hold a lighter to the end of the ribbon, just enough to melt it so it doesn't fray. You don't need to actually touch the ribbon with the lighter. It just needs to be close enough to melt. ( please use caution). Fold the end of the ribbon over about a 1/4 inch. Thread the needle of the silk thread through the two layers of ribbon. The folded over end of the ribbon should be on the inside where the first pearl will go. Now you are ready to start adding pearls. Thread on a pearl and then thread the silk through the center of the ribbon at the end of the pearl. I kind of eye ball this part. Alternate back and forth. Ribbon Pearl Ribbon Pearl. Sometimes It should look something like this while you are working.....<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I completed about 6 inches of ribbon and pearls because my toggle clasp gave me an additional inch and a half. Adjust the length of ribbon and pearls according to how much length your clasp will add and how large your wrist is. When you have it long, enough cut the ribbon from the spool, leaving enough to double it over. End the bracelet by repeating the same procedure you did at the beginning. Melt the end of the ribbon, fold it over toward the last pearl, and thread the silk through the two layers of ribbon. Make a knot up tight against the the ribbon. Add your second bead tip with the hook facing away from the bracelet. (Note the photo above). Make a knot. Add a bit of bead glue to each knot inside the bead tip. Cut when dry. Add your jump rings and clasp. Enjoy :))</div>

When the season is over I find it such a shame to just throw them out. This year I decided to recycle the cards I received in a couple of different ways.<br />
<br />
First I made Christmas tags for next year. I hate paying full price for wrapping supplies. This year when I went to wrap presents I didn't have any tags so I had to run out and pay full price. So annoying! So I prepared some tags for next year by cutting the fronts of the Christmas cards to approximately 2 x3, punching a hole in the top and adding some ribbon. Now I'm all ready for next year and I won't have to run out to CVS!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The next thing I did with some of the cards that we had received was something that I had read about in our local newspaper: Project CARD ONE. This project sends holiday cards to our servicemen overseas. They accept new and used holiday cards. If sending used cards, tear off the decorative front to create a postcard, then either write a personal message to a service member or leave blank. Cards may be mailed to Project CARD ONE, MLO P.O. Box 68, Greenwood Lake 10925.<br />
<br />
Do you do anything special with the cards you receive?Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17447400919857683429noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9009207600672975399.post-36584205131007894872013-01-01T13:42:00.000-08:002013-01-01T13:42:00.296-08:00Happy New Year<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<span style="font-size: small;">Happy New Year! Happy New Beginnings! As we embark on 2013 let's think about all of the potential a new year brings. I especially want to think about all of the good we can bring to others through positive energy. Do you work with someone who is always miserable? Do you see people in the grocery store who look like they hate every moment of that chore? How does it make you feel to be around those people? I know it makes me feel down and cranky. I could be in a great mood but being around a Negative Nellie can take the wind right out of my sails.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: small;">Of course everyone has a bad day. Of course everyone tends to feel down, especially during these grey winter months. It's natural. But do we need to share this with the whole world? Confide in a dear friend, your mother, your sister.....then smile.....and be thankful that you have someone to talk to.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: small;">I don't want to be the person who brings everyone down. I know that when I come home from work in a bad mood and start yelling it affects the whole household.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: small;">So in this new year let's remember to be a positive force, not the Negative Nellie. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: small;">Oh....and remember to SMILE!</span>Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17447400919857683429noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9009207600672975399.post-56360758990356197772012-09-12T18:31:00.002-07:002012-09-12T18:31:59.311-07:00Pearl RedoI was recently asked to make a new piece of jewelry out of a children's length pearl bracelet. The pearls belonged to my customer's mother and she wanted to pass them on to her grown granddaughter. One thing I didn't want to do is add in pearls or beads that hadn't belonged to her mother. I decided to add sterling silver chain and make the bracelet into a necklace. I think it's the perfect combination of a classic look with a modern twist.<br />
<br />
Here is the bracelet before.....<br />

Gone are the days of walking them to school or the bus stop. Gone are the days of projects made out of pipe cleaners and dry pasta. Gone are the days of Show and Tell. Oh, how time marches on. One thing I will not give up though is first day of school pictures! So here they are.........<br />

It belonged to my customer's mother. It has the most beautiful clasp. I love working on these vintage pieces. I can't help but wonder....Was it a gift from an adoring spouse? Did she wear it to a neighbor's Christmas party? What color was the gown she wore it with? I love that my customer honors her mother by wearing this special piece and has it repaired and strengthened so that she can wear it for many more years. And possibly pass it on to her daughter one day.Michellehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17447400919857683429noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9009207600672975399.post-68113735720420414342012-08-28T19:11:00.000-07:002012-08-28T19:11:00.597-07:00Last Days of SummerOur dog Abby LOVES to swim. There is nothing that makes her happier. I know, I'm her mom! Summer is quickly coming to a close. The pool temp is going down a few degrees every day. Abby doesn't care though, she is ready to jump right in. Here she is getting a few last laps in before fall....<br />
